As much as I would have loved to venture to the other southern Islands of Thailand (Koh Lanta, Krabi etc…) I had planned to meet a group of people on Koh Phangan (in the east) for the infamous Full Moon Party on the 23rd of the month (arriving on the 20th).
I will admit, I was lazy and decided to take a ferry from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket then fly from Phuket to Koh Samui (1.5 hour flight). As opposed to taking a ferry, bus, ferry (which would have saved me some money, but taken 12 or more hours). I stayed in Samui for a night, then took a 45 minute ferry over to Koh Phangan.
I met up with a friend from home who had also been traveling Thailand. She met a bunch of people along the way and had added me to a group chat a few weeks before. It was really great meeting everyone face to face and I couldn’t have asked for better people to spend time with!
The Full Moon Party is held on Haad Rin Beach in Koh Phangan. People get decked out in bright colors and neon paint! As with any party, there’s lots of alcohol, music, and dancing! The special thing about this party is that it’s held under a full moon and right on the beach (although, because of its popularity, they now do quarter moon and half moon parties… and others in between). People party until the sun comes up!
Personally, I think it was a little too hyped up. Don’t get me wrong, I had a fantastic time with fantastic people and I’m glad I was able to experience it! Two nights before, when we had a big group that came together randomly, is the night I will remember forever. Nothing beats getting to know awesome people, late night beach walks, delicious milkshakes, sinking in the sand, and a beautiful moon!
A couple days after the full moon I headed to Koh Tao. This island is famous for being one of the cheapest places in the world to obtain a scuba diving certification. Unfortunatly, diving isn’t my thing so, I passed on that. I took a few days to regroup after the crazy previous week. One of the days a friend and I took a scooter around the island to some look out points.
We ended our day at the Natural High Bar. It’s a little off the beaten path but worth the bumpy ride. Unfortunately, we didn’t beat a rain storm and ended up having to stay for a couple hours to wait it out, but I didn’t mind at all. This place was like being in a treehouse in the jungle, so peaceful and serine. It’s all indoor/outdoor, so when it started to rain we just moved to an inside couch to watch the beautiful storm. To make things even better, they have a small food/snack menu which actually includes a vegitarian burger. Probably one of the best I’ve had in a very long time! Oh, and the shakes were amazing too!
After Koh Tao, I was off to Koh Samui (via yet another ferry) so I could extend my Thai visa *check out my post about that experiance if you haven’t already*.
Koh Samui (for the 3rd time) was my last island stop before returning to the mainland.
